Having a difficult time with my Practicum Experience

Getting a foot in the door of a healthcare facility is immensely important in this competitive day and age, and some students want to get an early start. However, not every nursing student wants to work as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). The purpose of this article is to discuss other healthcare-related jobs that nursing students can work. Mentorship in the Nursing Community

After spending alot of time on this forum reading vrious posts and speaking to RNs I know in real life, I am utterly AMAZED that there seems to be a general territorial nature in the nursing profession. Again, I'll emphasize the word "general" because there are no absolutes when dealing with the attributes of a population of people. However, although I am strongly considering pursuing RN/APN, in my current field (male-dominated) I have never seen as many negative attitudes, judgements or tearing down of folks as I have seen here and heard in the real world in the nursing field. I believe for any profession to thrive it needs mentorship. Read More...

Almost passed out during clinicals!!

I'm a second year nursing student, and am currently in my med surg rotation at clinicals. The hospital I'm in now is much more exciting and learning oriented than the previous hospital I had been in. That being said, I'm seeing a lot more than I ever have. Yesterday, I was watching a nurse remove a catheter from a patient's jugular vein in the cardiac step-down unit. I was ok at first, but as she was putting pressure on the neck I started to feel dizzy. I tried to think about other things and looked away from the patient, but that didn't help. I began to fall over and almost blacked out. Read More...

Having a difficult time with my Practicum Experience

I feel alone and unsupported at all. I've tried talking to my school instructors about this, but they don't say or do anything about it.... I've tried talking to my friends about it, but they don't understand because they have awesome working relationships with their preceptors. I tried talking to my parents, but they just blame me and think i'm just bugging the nurses and that's why they don't want to work with me.....This is one of the worst experiences in nursing school...and I do not know what to do..... Curious about other testing sites

I took my exam in Des Moines, IA. I was told by our instructors to only take your ATT letter & your ID and leave everything else locked in your car, so that's what I did.
When I got there, I was fingerprinted on each hand, palm scanned 3 times on each hand, had to pull out my pockets, lift my sleeves as far as they go, turned around and they inspected my back pockets, frisked my pant legs, had me pull up my hair so they could look under it and in my ears and last they looked in my mouth. I was wondering if they were going to do a body cavity search at that point! Ha! In my opinion, it was a bit over excessive. I felt like I was going to prison or something. Does every testing site do all that? On top of all that searching, they have microphones and cameras in each cubical... you'd think that would be enough. Wow. Read More...

Should I stay with my parents or move closer to the campus?

Experience with PRIVATE student loans

I have a bachelors degree and I have been informed by all the nursing schools (community college ADN programs) that I do not qualify for any government financial aid/student loans due to my BA. I can however get private student loans through Wells Fargo or Sallie Mae. Does anyone have any experience with private student loans? Advice? Which bank is better? How do private differ from government student loans? Any input from students who have had to go the private route would be much appreciated!! Read More...

Is there really a "nursing shortage"?

I was just wondering if all this talk about a nursing shortage is true, because I've also been reading on here how difficult the job market is. Does it depend on the area perhaps? I live in Oklahoma so if anyone from OK would like chime in that would be great. I am interested in all comments and would just like come knowledgable clarity on the issue. Read More...

NCLEX-RN "select all that apply"

I took the NCLEX-RN 2-4-12. I had at least 40% that were "select all that apply". I had a total of 75 questions and it took me 1 hour 10 minutes. I was of course panicking because select all that apply are my absolute weakness! At one point I had 5 in a row. The whole time I kept thinking that i had to be failing! I immediately emailed my kaplan instructor and she said those are considered harder level questions. She said that it was a good sign that I kept getting those type of questions. Found out the next day that I passed. So if you are in this situation, do not panic like I did! Read More...
