Munchausen by Internet: The Lying Disease that Preys on the Heart

For decades, people have heard of Munchausen syndrome, a disorder characterized by people taking extraordinary measures to fake illnesses or psychological trauma for the sole purpose of attracting attention and sympathy from others. Munchausen sufferers will do almost anything to validate the delusion of their illness. Another variation of this disorder is Munchausen by proxy, in which people physically or psychologically harm loved ones to gain attention and sympathy. In more recent years, a newer variation of this disorder has been noted to infect online communities. Read More...

Should nurses perform outside scope of practice during emergency situations?

For my ethics class we have to write a synthesis paper on an ethical issue in nursing. I chose to write about whether or not nurses should act outside of their scope of practice during emergencies. For example, if a patient needs intubated and no physician is around (and can't be around fast enough), should the nurse perform the intubation if it will save the patient's life? I'm having a lot of trouble finding information on this topic and have only found one source that is hardly helpful. Is my topic too narrow? Any suggestions on what to search when I'm looking for sources? Read More...

Anxiety in the Clinical Setting

I have encountered many posts on the pre-nursing student and general nursing student pages that include extreme anxiety over the fear of mutilating, killing, or causing harm to their patients. Many posts include phrases such as "their life is my hands" and "there is too much responsibility".

I am a junior in a BSN program and I work as an aide in a critical care unit. I have to admit, I do not feel the extreme anxiety that seems to be bothering so many other nursing students. I recognize my level of responsibility and dedication to the elimination of mistakes, but I also know that I am not the sole care provider and I work as part of the healthcare team. Read More...

Midlife students, did your high school every lose your transcripts?

My high school is stating they cannot find my transcripts from when I graduated (I did find my high school diploma from 1981). Have any of you who have gone back to school more than a decade after you graduated ever run into a situation where your high school could not locate your transcripts? If yes, would you mind sharing how you dealt with that situation? Read More...

What do you use to take notes in class

I am wondering what you guys use to take notes during class. Do you prefer the typical way to take notes with paper and pen? Or do you use laptops? I am not a very fast typist so this would probably not work for me, but willing to try it I guess. I have also heard of smart pens sold at best buy that write with ink but record voice and note can be downloaded into a PC. Have anyone of you heard of these and if so would you mind sharing your experiences with me. Read More...

Teachers fueling the "my degree is better than your degree" problem

I have one professor who keeps pointing out why BSN is better. I'm glad that she takes pride in our program, and maybe pointing out differences is a good idea, but to continually describe how we will be superior to our ADN counterparts does a serious disservice, I think. I don't think I'm better than an ADN-RN. She (or he) chose that program based on her own goals and needs. My less open-minded classmates may not think that way, though, and we are now going to have more people walking into the workforce with this "I'm better than you" chip on their shoulders. I don't think that's okay! Read More...

I graduated from college a couple of years ago and am looking to enter either a BSN program or Yale's program (so I will be taking the GRE). My question is, are there any other accredited programs that don't have pre-req's? Read More...
