My Semester in Review

I started out this semester with a lot of confidence. After all, I was pretty much a straight A student up until now. I had heard how nursing school is totally different from other classes but I don't think that really sunk in until I started. The first exam really rocked my confidence. I had seen those kind of questions before, but they had not really "mattered" until the grade mattered. Lab was also a brand new experience for me. I had to get over the feeling of "It's only a dummy" and see the dummy as a potential real person. Read More...

Forced wearing of nursing cap.

I do not wish to wear the cap and have been told by program director that "the class voted to wear it and you have to or you will not be able to participate". I understand the cap is traditional, but I feel it calls specific attention to my gender and not my success in passing nursing school. I've worked very hard to get where I'm at and I wish to celebrate my success with a pinning ceremony.

I truly feel that being "forced" to wear the cap is discriminatory based on my gender alone. Read More...

Stress Free Finals!!!

I'm kind of sad, but mostly excited. I did the math today after my ATI test. In order to get an A in my class, I would need 105 points out of 100 on my final exam. So, that's knocked out due to impossibility. In order to get a B, I just need to get a 60 or greater. That takes SOOOOOO much pressure off of me. No matter how good I do, I can't get an A. And, unless I bomb the final, I've got my B. I can live with the B (after much internal therapy sessions over it), and don't have to worry about a thing. Woohoo!!!!!! I'm still going to study a little, but not as much as if the A was still possible. Read More...

I'm going to throw up.

I took my NCLEX Monday. Shut me off at the maximum 205, went into the bathroom &did the PVT got the "good pop up" but I have yet to see my name on the board website. What if I'm the one exception where I got the good pop up but failed! Read More...

Does Gender Affect Our Views On Pay?

The other day I was involved in a cyber ‘chat’ with a user on another popular social networking site who happens to be a nurse in a different state than the one in which I reside. Even though this person has never met me in person or worked with me one single day in our lives, she typed, “You’re probably one of those lazy nurses who wants top dollar for minimal work.” Read More...

Nervous new student ... trying to get prepared!

I start nursing program in Jan 2013 and am working on getting all of my supplies and items needed for my first day/week of class. There is so much to get done, buy and plan. Don't have much time or money to waste.

Have a quick question and appreciate your feedback. Based on your experiences as previous or current first time nursing students, what do you think is better -- Binder (maybe 2") with dividers & loose leaf paper OR a 5 subject notebook with separate folders? Read More...

Life Expectancy Up But More Healthy Years Lost to Disability

Although life expectancy is increasing, global estimates of healthy life expectancy indicate that the world's population loses more years of healthy life to disability today than in the past, according to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010, published in the Dec. 15 special issue of The Lancet. What classes did you pair with A&P I (Anatomy)?

I'm seeking the advice of those who've done it before me. What courses and how many did you take with A&P I. I don't work and wanted to really get a chunk of credits out of the way, what do you suggest? I know I have to take a pre-calc class in spring as well as A&P (which should be okay, I'm pretty comfortable math and scored the top rated professor!)

Do you think I could add another science? or maybe 2 other humanities classes like speech and health? I know a&p is mostly memorization so I already started memorizing the musculo-skelatal system, so I've got all major bones and muscles memorized already. Read More...

How old were you when starting prereqs and did it discourage you?

I just turned 22 and a lot of people I went to high school with are graduating with a bachelor's degree this spring. So I am feeling a little discouraged and sad.

I started community college right out of high school. I was a little lazy and didn't want hard classes so I went with elementary education even though I wasn't too sure about it. Well a year and a half into it I discovered nursing was where I really wanted to be so I changed majors and took classes for the local ADN program at my community college. I went to a information session and got misleading information that I could apply then with just a few prereqs done so I applied. I got a letter telling me I needed to finish all my prereqs before I could apply and the admissions advisor changed. Read More...
