How do I avoid the drama and cliques?

I'm only in the pre-nursing program right now, but from what I've been reading there can be some drama in Nursing School. How do you avoid it and stay focused? Do you just distance yourself from everyone? What happens if you have to do a project or clinical with one of the troublemakers? Read More...

What to do when your patient adores you?

I am in my first semester of nursing school and I have my clinicals on the Med Surg floor of a hospital. So far I have had 3 different patients and they have all absolutely loved me; I do not say this in a cocky way. I am just super nice to them, I'm attentive, I actually listen to what they say, etc.

The point I'm trying to get to is I get into certain situations and I'm not sure about the correct way to respond and what is appropriate/inappropriate and what should I do in these situations. Here are some examples... Read More...

Large percentage failing nursing school exams, why?

I have a question on the legitimacy of testing in nursing school. Maybe someone can help me out with advice. I am in 3rd semester of nursing school have passed all exams up until my first exam in med surg this semester. In fact only 5 people passed the exam out of 31 people and the class average was a 68. On the second exam it seemed more fair however there were two specific questions like respiratory ques (such as breath sounds) on the GI test that we had no idea would be on the test. The focus was GI. Would it be safe to say that this is being unjust and risking points of students on exams? Can teachers do this or should they give us a review sheet hinting of what to brush up on from previous semesters so we do not risk points that could have been answered correctly if we knew to brush up? Feelings of graduation vary some do not even attended others are thrilled to share with their fellow students a completed hard earned goal. Read More...

What would you like to get out of your Community Nurse Rotation?

I am a nurse working in cardiac rehab and frequently precept student nurses in their community nursing rotation. I am not part of any faculty but am interested in putting forward a curriculum /plan for students in a way that would best serve you. I am experienced in med/surg and a lot of critical care specialties so I try to incorporate this in the learning process.

Please give some thought as to what you feel would be most beneficial to you during that rotation. Right now students spend 3 days with me and I have listed some of the areas I cover. I am mindful that some students are tired and I give them the option to navigate their learning in the pace that they wish. I tell them I am not there to judge but to assist so if there is an area they are weak at let me know and I will help. I encourage mistakes because it means a student is stepping out of their comfort zone. Read More...

Study Tips HELP!

I'm a first semester nursing student and I need help with some study tips. We have had 6 tests so far, and I thought I was doing well-made 83, 85, 91, 79, 92, and then 73! Anything below a 75 is failing so when I got that 73 I was pretty upset because I felt like I studied forever for it. I have tried so many techniques-reading the book, doing nclex questions, doing the study guide, etc...I think the problem is I do poorly when we only have like a week in between tests (my lowest test grades show that) because usually I only get to study 4 days out of that week and it's over like 20 something chapters. So my question is when you are crunched for time what do you focus on? just the power points? Read More...
