Tips from a tutor

I hope these tips will help you as you study for your boards. I recently graduated this past January and passed my boards in April. I was a tutor in school and even I had to take the exam a second time. It wasn't because I did not have the knowledge, I genuinely struggle with test-taking anxiety and had to use strategy to apply my knowledge. Read More...

I was yelled at by my nurse yesterday

As a student, I am still learning my boundaries. I got yelled at (I mean REALLY yelled at, in front of about 5 other staff members no less) by the nurse I was working with yesterday at my hospital. Myself, red faced and wanting to hide in a hole for a week, stood there and listened to my nurse tell me I ask too many questions. And you know what? She is right. I think I will allow myself mental "question coupons", three per clinical day. Unless something is REALLY pressing, of course. An embarrassing lesson learned- but very appreciated. Read More...

Is it normal for them to just let us take care of the pt's on our own?

Today was my first day of clincials *doing them in a nursing home* and they pared us up with each other *2 in each group* gave each group a pt and let us take care of them, alone. Is it normal for this to happen? I heard that usually they put us with a CNA to follow around, but they bascially just said, "here's a pt... good luck!" we did full body baths, transfers, etc. I'm just wondering if this happens a lot and is normal or not. Is it possible to be too emotional for nursing?

After a lot of thinking I liked the thought of becoming a nurse. I'm a very caring person and I love helping others. I want to choose a career where I'm up and moving and feel like I'm making a difference and helping others. I also want to make sure that I choose a career that will always be in demand no matter where I go, and has a decent salary. When I mentioned this to my parents, they said I was too emotional for nursing. Read More...
