To Hell and Back: Demons of ICU Past

All individuals who experience events perceived as traumatic undergo a cascade of emotional and physiologic reactions as the body's normal defense to stressors, a "fight or flight" reaction if you will. We all go through incredibly rough times in our lives as we live in this imperfect existence but what sets PTSD sufferers apart is that long before the experience has ended, the trauma still haunts in a profound way. PTSD affects an individual's ability to live life to the fullest by interfering with life's tasks such as employment and other roles in society we all need to fulfill.

[Toon] What game show describes your workplace?

Is it "Lets Make A Deal," "Jokers Wild", or something more like "Gilligan's Island" or "Beverly Hillbillies?" We all know some units are run better than others. Some operate smoothly and everyone lives in happyville. Others, well lets just say, more closely resemble "Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo." Whats your game show/unit?

My New Life as a Transport Nurse

A few months ago, I started a job at the top critical care transport program in my state. I'm still in orientation and (for now) only part time, but I wanted to share my limited, "new kid" experience. I tell people it's simultaneously the best and worst thing to happen to me...

Do you know your patients?

Just started LTC ... It seems nurses don't know many of the diagnoses that their patients have. Being a newgrad nurse, I feel like it's a must to know your patient Hx. But again, I was a student. Fake crying and bad acting in the ER

I see a lot of untalented actors in the ER. They walk to their rooms telling their sad stories that sound like poorly written scripts. Then they plop down onto the gurney, starting what sounds like feigned tearless crying. Some of them continue to wail after you've left the room, amping it up every time they see you walk by through the glass door, peeking through their eyelids to see if you've noticed. I've seen some really bad acting in the ER!

Where are all the nurses?

I have at least 4 full time and 2 part time openings and I haven't had one good candidate apply. I've had people who lie on their application, people who will only work first shift and are amazed that they'll have to work on every other weekend...where are all the nurses?

The Case For Job Hopping

"The nurses here are all mean to me -- it's a hostile work environment."

If you're having problems getting along with others, and those problems follow you from job to job, it's time to take a step back and figure out what it is that you're doing to irritate every co-worker you encounter. It took me too long to figure out that the co-workers in my second job really didn't want to hear how we did things in my first job...

A Day In The Life

I was just wondering what a day in the life of a Critical Care Nurse is like. I am also curious as to how long it takes to obtain a position in CC after graduation. What is average starting salary vs salary after a few years of experience. Also, did anyone participate in a residency program to obtain their CC training?
