Advice for the first year of Nursing

In school you learn a lot, but nothing that can prepare you for actual working knowledge. I'm sure you have heard again and again about your first year of nursing and how it is the hardest. I just finished mine and here are some words of wisdom that I have reflected on. Read More

Nurse in her 40's trying to work in Critical Care

I am in my 40's and have been a nurse for 24 years. I recently completed all courses for my Critical Care Nursing Certificate except for the clinical component which is ten 12 hr shifts. I am starting to think that I won't have a hope in obtaining a job in critical care because ICU's only want to hire new grads. Any thoughts? Read More

The waiting game, when is it okay to check in?

I had both of my second interviews early last week. Both went well I think. I have heard back positively for a third and final interview with one but not the other. I know there are other candidates to be interviewed but this one that I have not heard from yet would be my preference. Is it too early to check in for a status update? Read More

The NICU is the best kept secret that is right out in the open!

I recently transferred to my hospital's level IV NICU from adult world and I have to say I KNOW I made the right decision. I love it there. It's like night and day compared to my old unit and all for the better. Some people automatically think "I can't deal with sick babies" and disregard the NICU as an option (I know I heard that every time I told someone I was moving there) but this unit really is pretty amazing and I feel like I am holding the best kept secret that is right out in the open - NICU Nursing is AWESOME! The Army's On Its Way

A few threads here on AN focusing on new Army officers heading to BOLC made me a bit nostalgic for my own training days at Fort Sam. The story below is true with minor details and names changed to protect identities. My insincere apologies to the Navy and Air Force as every branch has their jokes about the other branches. What baby catches you every time?

I always have a soft spot for trached kids or Neuro kids. I always swear I am not going to primary or associate nurse another one because they can literally suck the life out of you, but I can never resist for long. My one friend loves gut kids, especially the short gut ones. Another one always wants the drug kids. She has the patience of a saint! Read More

NP pay related to years as an RN

I've noticed that where I work, the minimum starting pay for an NP is about $5 more an hour than what I make with 4 yrs of being an RN with my BSN and a specialty certification. My question is, Would a graduate NP make the minimum or does nursing experience count? Read More

Nurses Notes: Guidelines On What Not To Chart

The significance of accurate, timely documentation by nurses and other members of staff cannot be emphasized enough. However, some types of documentation should not be entered onto the patient's medical record for various reasons. This piece contains a general list of notations that nurses should not document in the patient's chart. Read More

Unemployment Insurance Benefits

I am thinking of leaving my full-time position I had for 10 years to take a travel assignment. I always wanted to travel, but only now do I have the freedom. My greatest fear is leaving for an assignment and, once complete, not being able to find another position I am happy with right away. In other words, I don't want to be forced to take a job, just because I need the money. Is it possible to collect UIB until a position opens in an area where I will be happy? Read More

Top 10 Reasons We Get Fired: Sleeping on duty

Sleeping on duty is number 3 in my series of 'Top ten reasons we get fired' Internet searches on this topic show it is a world wide problem, and not limited to the US. Research is showing that allowing Night shift workers to have naps on their breaks can help to prevent errors which occur. Yet we continue to be very intolerant of co-workers who nod off or sleep when at work. Read More
