Pregnant in Nursing School.... by proudnurseRN

The nausea, the exhaution, the weakness all came at once. I excused myself, walked out of the room into the hall, slid down a wall, and passed out. I remember a nurse coming up to me and asking if I was okay, and my clinical instructor being called over the intercom. "Great," I thought. Here I am, in a facility where I should be helping, and learning, and I'm being surrounded by staff. I came back to, alert and oriented, Vitals WNL, BS a little low but not critical. Then, my clinical instructor asked the golden question... "Could you be pregnant?"

On the other side of the IV by Sonjailana

After the usual pre-op screens, pepcid, decadron, and versed IV, I wasbrought back to the OR. The staff was jovial, teasing me about being skinny, and the next thing I knew I was under. The next thing I remember was being in PACU. I couldn't talk at all. Mind you, this was a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. I was in excruciating pain and I started bawling. I felt like I was still on fire from the cauterizing machine. The RN says to me "WHY ARE YOU CRYING???" Then, my anesthesiologist apparently heard my commotion and backed me up and asked the nurse what was going on.

How often do your pts thank you? by cmonkey

I had surgery 12/28 and spent four days on med-surg afterwards. I literally spent 3/4 of my time sleeping (bliss! oh rapture unforseen!), but *every single time* anyone came into my room for any reason (meds, IV change, turn off the freaking IV alarm, phlebotomist, housekeeping, whatever), I said "thank you." I got the feeling I was abnormal.

Also, and just because it's funny to me, apparently I'm the only person who's ever requested prune juice, let alone TWO servings. I heard the young CNA in the hallway marveling that anyone would actually ask for the stuff. I actually like it.

So. How often do your pts say thank you, and does it come as a surprise when they do? Am I a rock star?

Vent: COBRA insurance, seriously?? by HeartsOpenWide

So I was laid off last month. Still waiting to get my application for COBRA insurance. I called the number to ask them when it was coming and asked them how much it was going to cost to have me and my husband on COBRA....$1,000 a MONTH just for medical. Seriously??? My unemployment check will not even come close to covering that, not even half! I am not in favor of Obama Care, but today I am seriously wishing some one would come up with a reasonable universal health care...Take my job away so I have no income and expect me to pay THAT for insurance...what are they smoking?

Curious About Drop-out Rate In Nursing School by CeilingCat

Our class started out with 72 students. Like most schools, it's a competitive program which takes 1-2 years of pre-Nursing school pre-req's to get into.... so the assumption is only the most dedicated will get in. Between 1st and 2nd semester we lost THIRTEEN students! Some didn't pass. At least two I know of were pregnancies/births.

One classmate commented to me that he heard our school's drop-out rate by the time graduation came around was 60%.

Is it normal to have so many students not make it?

Anyone have anything positive to say about nursing school? by AllThingsPink

Besides the outcome at the end; becoming an RN, is there anything positive you've experienced throughout nursing school? I've read so many negative things (and for a person starting her first semester Tuesday, it's not always a good thing to read all of the negative things, though some are reality and help prepare and know what to expect). So what are some things you liked/loved about nursing school?

What Are My Options After Failing Nursing Program in CUNY School? by kat252

I live in New York and attended a CUNY College where I failed my 3rd semester of nursing and was not able to continue in the nursing program. I applied to Long Island University because I thought since it was a private school I could continue my nursing studies there, but was denied entrance into the nursing program because I failed the a nursing class in the CUNY College. Can someone help me with information on where I can continue my nursing studies? I am currently an LPN but dream of becoming an RN.
